Hi,
Here you will learn how to do the basics in mapping later I will add more tips and other general things that you can do to create a good map.

First You Need to go to Game Configuation Tab. (When you load VHE for the first time it asks you if you want to use the help file to setup the editor, you should say yes).
Then In Game Configuation Go to Configuation where you will see Half Life.
Press the EDIT button.

O.k now we need to add an FGD file and this lists all the entities for the editor to use

1. Click on Add

2. Find the "half-life.fgd" which is located in the Valve Hammer Editor directory, in a folder named fgd.

3. Click Open

Once you have done this you will need to move down to the four browse boxes, here we will setup the directory structure for the editor. It gives examples of what folders are needed, you just need to find them in the Steam folder.

In the first Tab Game Executable
Put Something Like.
C:\Steam\SteamApps\Your@Email.com\Half-Life
Next Tab
Mod Directory
We are doing the Mod Half Life at the moment.
So we should but something like this.
C:\Steam\SteamApps\Your@Email.com\Half-Life\Valve
Next Tab
Game Directory
Put Something Like This
C:\Steam\SteamApps\Your@Email.com\Half-Life\Valve
Next Tab
RMF Directory
Put Something Like This.
C:\Program Files\Valve Hammer Editor\maps

Right Then We Have Done Gamer Configuation. Now We Need To Go To Build Programs.
1. Here you need to tell the editor where the hl.exe file is located so find that.
2. Next you will need to select the compile programs, these are what you extracted earlier. The editor comes with compile tools but they are old and not too good like Other tools, so use the ones beginning with hl. (hlrad.exe for example)
3. Here choose valve->maps in the steam folder, the maps bit isn't shown below but make sure you select valve->maps.
So now in Build Programs ill go throught all the tabs like I did in Game Configuation.

So At the Top Select Your Right Configuation (We are using Half-Life)
Next Tab
Game Executable
Put Something Like This
C:\Steam\SteamApps\Your@Email.com\Half-Life\hl.exe
Next Tab
CSG Executable
Put Something Like This
C:\Program Files\Valve Hammer Editor\hlcsg.exe
Next Tab
BSP Executable
C:\Program Files\Valve Hammer Editor\hlbsp.exe
Next Tab
VIS Executable
C:\Program Files\Valve Hammer Editor\hlvis.exe
Next Tab
RAD Executable
C:\Program Files\Valve Hammer Editor\hlrad.exe
Next Tab
Place compiled maps in this directory before running this game
Put Something Like This
C:\Steam\SteamApss\Your@Email.com\half-life\valve

Kool so we now have our game configuration and our build programs set up !.

THIS NEXT BIT WILL REQUIRE GCF EXPLORER FOR OTHER GAMES YOU MAY NOT NEED TO USE GCF EXPLORER.

Now the final part will be adding the textures themselves, but first we need to extract the .wad files into your Steam folder. They are hidden in .gcf files so this is where you will need your GCF Explorer open.

So Go To C:\Steam\SteamApps\half-life.gcf

Then select half-life.wad and right-click it and extract it to the valve folder within steam.
Now Go To The TEXTURES TAB and choose .wad you had just extracted.

Press OK in the bottom right and then click File->New in the editor and you will be greeted with a blank map to start with.

Wicked. So its now time to make the map.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I Could Not Put it on because the post was too big =(

A big Hi To All the Mega games Community !

Thanks,

Pt2. Making your map

You Have Now Configured Valve Hamer Editor So its time to start making your first map !.
You should see something like this

You may think wtf :beigeconf
Explanation:

One named Camera in the upper left, one named top (x/y) in the upper right, one named front (y/z) in the lower left and finally one named side (x/z) in the lower right.

Choosing A Texture For Your First Brush

To the right you will see a black lambda on a pink background, this is the ugly standart texture in halflife and it is called AAATRIGGER. This texture you hopefully not want to use anywhere visible so click the browse button. you should see unreasonably many pictures looking like crates, walls and containers etc. Find anything you would use for your floor and doubleclick it.

Now you should be back to the main window.

Creating A Room.

Click the block tool (I oftenly refear to it as the brush tool), its a white cupe in the left bar. this is used for draging your brush. Now go to the top (x/y) windows and make a square in the size of 256x256.

Then Right Click On Your Square And Press Create Object.

Look At Your Work

Click the Camera in the leftbar and then click once in the camera window. In the View menu you choose 3d textured polygons. Click again in the Camera window and hold down your mouse button. Move around the mouse untill you spot your box. Still holding down the button, you use w,a,s and d just like in Counter-Strike to move around. If you got that right you will be looking at something simular to this.

Creating A Light

Right now your map is +++++ black. Click the entity tool right above the block tool and click on the center of your room.
Rightclick and create object. Avery small box should now show up in the most of the windows. Click it once, so that it becomes red and then hold down the ALT key while pressing Enter. Make sure that light is selected as class just as below.

Close the Object Proberties window again. Now you have a light in your level.

Spawn Points (COUNTER STRIKE)

Creating A Counter-Terrorist Spawn

Do as you did with the light before but this time you choose info_player_start instead of light. When you close the window a big box repressenting a Counter-Terrorist spawn sows up. (in your VHE it might just be a green cube, but that will make no difference).

Creating A Terrorist Spawn

Same as CT-spawn, but choose info_player_deathmatch instead of info_player_start. Make sure that there is plenty of space between theese two fellows. I suguest 128 units between the centers of each spawn atleast. You also want to place them above the floor, a 16 units gab between the buttom of the spawns and the floor will be enough (you get stuck in the floor when spawning if you do this wrong). It is also important that you place both spawn points inside the room, or you will get a LEAK error when compiling.

Compiling
First you need to save your map. It'd just as you save everything else in all other programs (File/save). Name your map something. and now for the fun part.. hit F9 and the following dialog will apear:
Click On EXPERT

You Should See something Like This.

Make sure you keep it as half-Life.
Now Press GO!.
Find your map and Run it !1

I hope you have found this to be a good Tutorial. I will be adding to it.

So were you going to ask permission to use images from interlopers.net or at least credit us? Didn't even bother to host them yourself either. Please remove them, thanks.

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

hammer editor and world craft are the same world craft is just another worrd for hammer editor just like teh hammer is another word for hammer editor

an easier way to use hammer editor is without configuring to do that you first need steam
http://www.steampowered.com/

then once you have steam go into tools>Source SDK>Select which game you want to use Hammer Editor for>then click on hammer Editor in Source SDK and once it starts up its preconfigured to build a map or whatever for the game you selected:D

Hey guys !
I have a question. Is it possible to create a wooden box that doesn't break and allows bullets to pass through to some extent?
I created a map with many boxes (textured using Wood texture), I want those boxes to act like wooden box and must have bullet penetration. I'm creating the map for Counter Strike - 1.6.
