01-03-05 UPDATE - Okay! Enough with the confusion!
The best and EASIEST cracks I've found are from Gizma, MarkyMoo, and Dr.Mad. Unfortunately, if you want your game to work right, you’ll have to use ALL three patches / crackers.
Steps to get Half Life 2 single player to work without Steam:
1) Copy .cab files from the CDs or DVD to a temporary directory.
2) Uncompress .gcf files from .cab files with
Winrar.
3) Make a directory for your game. (ex. C:\HalfLife2)
4) Use
Gizma Decryptor to extract game files from the .gcf files. Target game files to the directory you made.
5) Copy
Gizma missing files into proper location. Replace existing files.
6) Run MarkyMoo’s
MooPatch patch.
7) Edit steamenu.ini to read as follows:
; Steam Emulation Library Configuration File
; Version 1.05 - hCUPa
[GCF]
; Directory Path in which the Steam GCFs (Game Cache Files) can be found
; If a path is not specified SteamApps if the game dir is used,
; as a last resort the Valve Steam Client SteamApps directory is used.
BaseDir=.
[Network]
; Steam Username as the Source Engine requests
Username=Undefined
8) Copy
MrMad’s Patch into proper location to fix additional bugs. Replace existing files.
9) Click the icon made by the
MooPatch on your desktop.
10) Finally play the game!
