how to recover files?

  1. I have an old pentium3 1.13 ghz with two 40gb seagate hdd. I use my first hdd as c: and the other d: just for saving photos and files. Suddenly when I was downloading pictures from the internet my system freezes and I have to restart my system by pressing the restart button. I got this message 'failure to boot'. bios can detect both of my hdd. My system is slow in booting up.I went to access my 2nd hdd inside "my computer' but it seems its not partitioned and it doesnt allow me to open the drive.I tried to recover my files using hdd regenerator but failed.I tried using Active Recovery. It was able to detect my files but halfway on the process of recovering it will just stopped. If i checked 'my computer' my 2nd hdd (drive D: ) is no longer being detected.I have to restart my computer again so that my system will detect my 2nd hdd. Is there any way i can save retrieve my file?
  2. Unfortunately it seems like the drive is bad enough to the point where regular recovery software wont' work, so there's probably not a whole lot you can do yourself.

At this point, you will most likely have to take the drive/send to a data recovery center, since these places have the proper hardware to do advanced data recovery (generally what they do is take the drive itself into a clean room, open it up and attempt to retrieve the data) but this is rather expensive, so it just depends on how important the data is to you.

    I would recommend downloading a copy of Hiren's bootcd(currently V11)....google search it;)

Boot from that and try the various recovery utils first.

But to be honest, if it's a slave drive & unreadable then it's prob fubar:((
